Route servers

The route servers let you exchange routes with every other route-server client through one BGP session per address family. They are transparent: AS403201 is not added to the AS path and the next hop is not changed.

NameIPv4IPv6ASN
rs1.vel.neverix.net172.20.0.12602:fa86:ffe::1AS403201
rs2.vel.neverix.net172.20.3.2542602:fa86:ffe:0:ffff:ffff:ffff:ffffAS403201

Please configure sessions to both route servers on both address families, so you stay connected during maintenance of either one.

Filtering

Routes you announce are accepted only if they pass all of these checks:

  • The first AS in the path is your ASN, and the next hop is your own peering address.
  • No bogon prefixes or bogon ASNs; IPv4 from /8 to /24, IPv6 no longer than /48; AS path no longer than 64.
  • RPKI: invalid routes are rejected. Valid and not-found routes are accepted.
  • IRR: the prefix and origin AS must be registered under the AS-SET (or ASN) recorded in your account. Filters are rebuilt from the IRR every 6 hours.
  • Max-prefix limits are set per member; contact us if you need them raised.

Rejected routes, with the reason, are listed under Filtered Prefixes in your account.

Controlling announcements

The route servers support the standard IXP Manager BGP communities (standard and large) to control which members receive your routes, and AS-path prepending towards specific peers. You can also set per-peer filters yourself under Route Server Filtering in your account. BGP graceful shutdown (65535:0) is honoured.

Transit

Selling transit over the NeverIX fabric is allowed, as long as it does not affect other members.

Route collector

The route collectors rc1.vel.neverix.net (172.20.0.3 / 2602:fa86:ffe::3) and rc2.vel.neverix.net (172.20.3.253 / 2602:fa86:ffe:0:ffff:ffff:ffff:fffe), both AS403201, only receive routes and never announces any. Please announce to it the same routes you announce to the route servers and bilateral peers. Their data feeds the peering matrix and the looking glass.

Example BIRD 2 configuration

protocol bgp neverix_rs1_v4 {
    local <your-ixp-ipv4> as <your-asn>;
    neighbor 172.20.0.1 as 403201;
    ipv4 { import filter <your-ixp-import>; export filter <your-ixp-export>; };
}
protocol bgp neverix_rs1_v6 {
    local <your-ixp-ipv6> as <your-asn>;
    neighbor 2602:fa86:ffe::1 as 403201;
    ipv6 { import filter <your-ixp-import>; export filter <your-ixp-export>; };
}

Disable enforce-first-as (or equivalent) towards the route servers, because AS403201 does not appear in the path.
